Meet our Research Team

At Merriman, we have a research team dedicated to the on-going review and improvement of our investment programs and financial planning tools. The experience and knowledge this team brings helps us to maximize risk-adjusted returns for our clients.

Larry Katz, CFA

Director of Research

Larry is responsible for the research and development, management and improvement of our buy-and-hold portfolios, active risk management programs and financial planning tools. Larry is a member of our investment committee and the hedge fund management team. He has an MBA in finance from the University of Chicago, a bachelor's degree in economics from Binghamton University, and is a CFA charterholder (Chartered Financial Analyst®).

Larry has an extensive background in portfolio management, financial analysis, asset valuation, risk assessment and money manager evaluation.

In his off hours, he enjoys spending time with his family and outdoor activities such as tennis, cross country skiing and cycling as well as reading. Larry's community involvement includes having served on two non-profit boards.

Dennis Tilley

Director of Alternative Investments

Dennis leads the portfolio management team for our alternative investment strategy, as well as coordinating associated marketing and educational efforts. Dennis joined our firm in 1999 and was director of research from 2000 to 2007. During that time he was responsible for all aspects of the firm's investment approach and portfolio management. Dennis continues to assist Larry Katz and is a member of the firm's investment committee.

Prior to joining our company, Dennis spent 11 years as an engineer doing research and development in electric propulsion. He published many papers and won numerous awards and patents in the field. Dennis holds a master's degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University and bachelor's and master's degrees in aeronautics and astronautics from the University of Washington.

Away from work, Dennis enjoys skiing, traveling and spending time with his wife and their two children.
