Becoming a Client

The first step in becoming a Merriman client is to meet with one of our financial advisors for a free initial consultation, either in our office or by telephone. They’ll review your current financial picture, define your goals and provide you with no-strings attached recommendations to get there – whether or not you decide to become a client.

Should you decide to become a client, you’ll have a primary advisor – the same person you met with for your initial consultation – but you’ll benefit from the expertise of our entire staff. You’ll find that during business hours, we nearly always answer the phone in person. It’s important to us that you receive service when you need it, not just when it’s convenient for us.

You and your advisor will be supported by an assigned back-up advisor and a highly-skilled client services team, who can answer your questions or take action on your account should you need assistance when your advisor is not immediately available.

A member of the client services team will work with you and your advisor to complete the paperwork necessary to open and manage your accounts, answering any questions you may have along the way.

Once we receive the signed paperwork, we’ll work with the custodian (Schwab or Fidelity) to open your accounts and transfer your assets from wherever they’re currently held. This process generally takes two-three weeks. It’s important to note that your assets are held in your name at all times, and we will never have possession of your funds.

Once the money has moved into your new accounts, we will have the ability to place trades and carry out the investment plan you and your advisor have created. We’ll also have limited authority that allows us to make transfers, withdrawals and additions only according to your instructions.

We will continue to work with you to manage the details and keep you on track. You’ll have the opportunity to meet regularly with your advisor to review your accounts – both those we manage and those we don’t – and update your investment plan based on changes that occur in your life.

In addition, we’re always available by phone or email for any questions that come up for you or your family members between meetings.
